Half Moon Bay - Sunset Beach State Park

My headwind finally turned into a tail wind yesterday. I made it about 65 miles. I saw the first other bike tourer also. He was headed north into the wind. I had just come out of the rain storm an passed into sunny Santa Cruz county. We stopped and talked a bit, gave each other a few tips of what lies ahead for the other.
Santa Cruz was nice and sunny.
I camped at sunset beach state park.

During the night a raccoon came up and was trying to get into some cans I left out to throw in the trash in the morning. I honked my airhorn at him and all it did was piss him off. I ended up chasing him away after a couple minute stand off. Now I'm headed 30 miles to seaside to watch the start of the tour of California.

San Gregorio-Pescadero State Beach-Half Moon Bay

I cleaned up camp and headed out during a break in rain. Weather man predicted occasional light rain with heavy rain in the afternoon. Maybe I could make the 40 mile trip to Santa Cruz. It took me about an hour to go 5 miles to Pescadero state beach. It got windier and rained harder. I turned around and went back to half moon bay. I got a hotel room took a hot shower.

Stanford - South San Fracisco - San gregario

I got an early start and started riding north to the city of south San francisco. From there, I cut across the mountains to the coast and headed south.

My first view of the ocean.
I was battling a strong headwind all day yesterday, hopefully it's turned into a tail wind today.
I camped in a dirt lot a little of the main road. 30 minutes after I got my tent up, it started raining...all night.

It turns out the water proof cover on my tent is not really water proof. Neither is my sleeping bag.
Headed to just south of Santa cruz today.

Orange-San Jose-Standford

Yesterday, I left orange @ 8AM and my bike bags packed as full as possible.

I was worried about taking enough food.

I took the first train to LA, then hopped on another train that took me to San Jose. Then the third train I was taking to a city called Belmont, so I could finish the night out and camp and half moon bay.
The train took 13 hours, and the food was horrible. The closer I got to my final destination, the less I wanted to make a 12 mile ride over the mountains to the coast. My train ended up getting stopped for a bit a few miles from Stanford.
I figured that would be my best best in finding somewhere to sleep for the night.
It appears that school is already out for them, I found a parking lot where motor home and a semi were staying for the night.
I didn't want to go far, and there was not much to cover my tent, so I stuck with a sleeping bag and no tent for the night.
Time for breakfast!

Fullerton Loop

Fullerton Loop.
This is a 12 mile loops of mostly dirt trails through the hills in the back of fullerton.
My weapon of choice was a mid 80's singlespeed (52x20) Motobecane "Grand Touring."
Kenny's weapon of choice was a newly put together mid 70's Schwinn Madison. Time to go. Photobucket The bridge.
Photobucket Photobucket Train. Photobucket Some of it was paved trails. Photobucket Clock tower. Photobucket Lots of big dirt hills. Lots of these signs. Photobucket Photobucket Laguna Lake. Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Kenny's bike didn't break this time. But I think his foot made up for it. Photobucket END! Photobucket

This time, our trek took us to Mt. Baldy. We took the same road up, GMR. This time we passed the shack and continued up Glendora Ridge Road to Baldy. 2 Cars passed us on the way up, 1 car passed us on the way down. Lots of cyclists passed us going both ways. Photobucket Time to head out. Photobucket Kenny had to fix his bike again. Photobucket Time to ride! Photobucket View of whats ahead from the shack. Photobucket Break time means put warm clothes back on. Photobucket More empty roads ahead. Photobucket Kenny's bike broke again. Photobucket While Kenny was fixing his bike, I went on a hike. The trail I followed looked to be about 6 inches wide and only traveled by mountain animals. Photobucket Somehow Kenny fixed his snapped cable by tying multiple cables together. Photobucket Ice puddles! Photobucket We made it to snow! Photobucket Dirty snowballs. Photobucket Just before the downhill to Baldy Village. Photobucket We made it! Photobucket We met Jake in Baldy Village. Photobucket He was our guard dog. Photobucket He took us on a tour as well. Photobucket We never did find out who lived in these places. Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Victory! Photobucket We never made it to the heavy snow. After the village there 2 miles of switchbacks and 1 mile of 15% grade, with winds that would have blown us over. It was up that way though. Photobucket Grub before we head out. Photobucket Time to head out. Photobucket Back at the car finally. Photobucket

This ride, our goal was originally the same GMR route, but leave earlier and keep going untill we hit snow/Baldy Village. The rains the days before had caused a mudslide on GMR, so we took Highway 39 through the mountains towards Crystal Lake. Crystal Lake was closed too, but we ventured past the gate a bit. Mmmmmm Photobucket Plan was to be ready to ride about 9 or 10...plans change. Photobucket Views... Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket There is a river back there...somewhere Photobucket Tired...We just went a mile down a dirt road to get to the river. Photobucket Break time! Photobucket Photobucket An old house...probably from the Donner Party Photobucket
